Originally built as a church dedicated to St. Genevieve, The Panthon is a grandiose building in the Latin Quarter in Paris inspired by the Pantheon commissioned by Agrippa in Rome. The monument's faade has been modeled on the Pantheon in Rome and its surmounted by a dome that owes some of its character to Bramante's "Tempietto".
From 1874 onwards, the sanctuary was decorated with paintings on canvas maroufl illustrating the life of Saint Genevive and the epic story of the beginnings of both Christianity and the monarchy in France. After many changes, it became a secular mausoleum containing the remains of distinguished French citizens. A permanent exhibition gives details about the lives and works of those who are buried here, from Voltaire and Rousseau to Alexandre Dumas. - The ticket gives access to an unguided tour of the monument
- Luggage and big items exceeding 55cmx35cmx20cm will not be accepted
- Free admission for children under 18 years, EU citizens (18-25), disabled people and their companion, French unemployed people, Pass Education holders
- Free admission for all visitors on the first Sunday of each month from November to March and on the European Heritage Days (the third weekend of September)
- The monument is closed on 1st January, 1st May, and 25th December
